My Muse

“You know,” joked my husband Mark, “I think you ought to be paying me royalties. You wouldn’t have anything to write about without me.”

“I know. It’s true. That’s the sad life of a codependent. My problem is being all wrapped up in your problems. But you haven’t given me much to write about lately anyway.”

“Well, do you want me to go out and do something addicty for you so you can write about it?”

“No, that’s okay. Please don’t. I have a lot of other things to write about.”

“Yes, but no matter what you write about, I’m your inspiration. I’m your Muse. So, back to those royalties. What do you think Muses usually get?”

“They usually get beautiful works written in their honor. And I’m already doing that.”

“Oh. Darn.”

“It’s okay. I don’t really have any money anyway. Maybe after I sue Stephanie Meyer for stealing the story of our crazy early romance and turning it into a vampire novel, okay?”

“Fair enough.”

“Just keep not doing anything addicty for me to write about in the meantime. Deal?”

“Deal.”

How, er, kind of Mark to make such a selfless offer. I hope you gave him a selfless thank-you wedgie in return.

I love how you write about the interaction between you and Mark about; the banter about ‘addicty things’ shows an openness that I feel is important in healing. You can’t NOT talk about it, can’t make it the gigantic elephant in the corner of the room; the lighthearted (?) banter about it makes me smile.
