Gratitude

Thank you, thank you, thank you, God, for the many blessings you’ve given me. This year, there have been new friends, new lessons, and important changes in my life and in my relationship with my husband. Thank you for those lessons, even the hard ones.

Thank you for providing me with the resources that I need for all the hard times, for the relapses and the abandonment and all the little stuff in between. Thank you for the gift of wonderful, loving girlfriends who are always ready to eat with me or pray with me or talk to me on the phone. Thank you for giving me sponsors who hold me accountable for the ways I’m taking care of myself. Thank you for spiritual advisors, for holy places, and for a church community that embraces me and my husband with all of our flaws.

Thank you for my family. They are messy, and our relationships are complicated, but thank you for their unyielding love for me. Thank you for the children in my life and the ways that they bless me with their love.

Thank you for the ways you let me be creative. Thank you for the fun I’ve had this year, for the places I’ve gone and the friends I’ve seen. Thank you for the breaks, the baths, the quiet…thank you for providing me with release valves exactly when I feel like I’ve had enough.

Thank you for stoking my spiritual fire. Thank you for opening my eyes to new ways to love you, serve you, and interact with you. Thank you for teaching me how to talk to you. Thank you for being patient with me when I’m fighting with you, and thank you for calmly, quietly guiding me back.

Amen.

You’ve got the right idea and you are getting there, step by step, one day at a time. That’s we can do sometimes. Keep it up and never up. Keep praying and hoping. You can’t always get what you want but God usually gives you what you need. Learn to recognize that. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Tom
