My Life Story.

I just completed the third step with my Al-Anon sponsor, and it involved telling my life story. I had to write it all out, from beginning to end, with particular focus on the parts of my life where I felt like God had been particularly involved in a situation. It was an interesting exercise…I began with my family before I was born, and I went all the way up to today.

Finding all the places where God touched my life was truly enlightening. Particularly, looking at the ugly times, like the sexual abuse. I’d never regarded the denial that kept me from dealing with that experience for ten years of my life as a gift from God, but I see it now. I didn’t think about it until I had the maturity to begin to process it.

I also loved telling my story to my sponsor. It was more like what I’m accustomed to doing in a fifth step, but it makes sense to me to tell the whole story before beginning the fourth and fifth step inventory process. I’m really ready to move on to the next steps, and I feel like we have a good foundation of trust and understanding between the two of us. She knows all the sordid details now, and we’ll be able to talk more easily as we go over the details of my inventory.

Each time I do the steps a different way, it feeds my soul. I think I’m becoming a better sponsor for all this variety of stepwork. I’m looking forward to seeing how I grow from the Al-Anon way.
