Description reads as:
Although in the White House for fewer than 2.5 years, Betty Ford was the most important feminist First Lady in the 6 decades between Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Rodham Clinton. She was a staunch advocate of abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment and the appointment and election of more women to important governmental offices. She helped countless thousands by going public with details of her breast cancer and 1974 mastectomy, focusing national attention on what was at that time, a seldom-discussed disease.
After leaving the White House, Betty Ford’s legacy continued. Most notably, her decision to boldly go public about her addiction to alcohol and painkillers and her positive experience with psychotherapy, is attributed with helping diminish the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction. She later established The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, where more than 50,000 people have undergone alcohol and drug addiction treatment since 1982. This documentary includes candid interviews with Mrs. Ford, her 4 children, presidential historians, her friends and colleagues.
