Other Victims

I love my cat, Gracie, something fierce. We always had Siamese cats when I was a kid, and I love them. Gracie is only half Siamese, so while she has a strong similarity to her purebred cousins, her face is rounder and there is a faint, pale grey striping in her coat. She like to be outside during the day, and when I get home from work she likes to race me up the stairs to our apartment. From where I came from, broke, homeless, crazy, unemployable, and wandering the frozen streets of Boise wondering why my life turned out so bad, having a home and having a living thing to share it with a scant 21 months later, is a miracle.

When I saw this story on the news tonight I was horrified, but I can totally see how it could happen.  When we think of meth addicts we usually think of the victims being children. I guess that’s not always the case.

BOISE — Boise Police found more than they bargained for Thursday after going to a local trailer home for a meth bust.
Officers went to a trailer home at 4210 State Street #7 to arrest the female occupant for felony drug possession. After serving a warrant, they found dozens of cats living in apparent neglect.
Animal control officers say many of the cats appear to be in very poor shape. They are being gathered and will be taken to a local shelter for evaluation.
“Drug use often leads to child neglect, and in this case, it appears to have led to animal neglect,” said Sgt. PD Burch.
Connie Shaffer, 49, of Boise, was arrested and charged with felony possession of meth and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
She has been booked into the Ada County Jail.
Idaho Humane Society officials removed 79 cats from the home as of late Thursday afternoon. They plan to return to the home Friday.
Officials say many of them are too sick to save and will likely have to be put down. The home was reportedly in deplorable condition.

That’s right.  79 cats.  They’re going back because they didn’t get all of them. They couldn’t. The Humane Society didn’t have enough room for all of them.

I guess the people in our lives aren’t the only ones we hurt.

That’s really, really sad. I’ve got two sad puppies at my house that are missing their daddy right now, so I probably find it extra moving. The dogs won’t sleep right because they keep waiting for him to come home. Yuck.
