My Bell

My very special blog BFF recently sent me a present. It’s a beautiful Japanese bell, quite like the one in the picture. When you bang it with the pretty wooden stick, it makes a wonderful, resonant sound, and it reminds me of the way there are angels that seem to sing when people say “Om” together before a yoga class.

I was showing it off to my husband, and I joked that I’d use it to force him into enlightenment. For instance, if he was lying around feeling sorry for himself, I’d ring my new bell to shake him out of his funk, and maybe use my beautiful, spiritual wooden stick to hit him over the head…you know, in a really spiritual way.

He had a different idea, however. He thought that he could put the bell next to his spot on the couch, and he could ring it when he wanted something from me. He developed a code impressively quickly.

“One ring means that you should bring me some soda. Two rings means I’m ready for dinner. Three rings means I want some dessert. And four rings means I’d like for you to come close to me and rub my legs and talk to me and take care of me, and after a few minutes, I’ll get tired of that and tell you to go away.”

It was funny, but I do wonder at his self-awareness sometimes. If he understands how he is acting enough to mock himself, why can’t he just stop acting that way?

Your bell is beautiful. I’m envious; I want a spiritual stick too!

God those things are addictive. I went into a Tibetan store the other day and practiced toning the meditation bowls. I guess you call it toning. But if you hold the bowl flat in your hand and run the stick around the outside rim, you will receive the most amazing resonance. It could be a way for me to quit smoking, now that I recall how absorbed I was with it! I want one!!!!!

Wow, the person who gave you that must totally love you. ;) If Mr. Junky uses it to summon you, hit him with the stick to enforce your boundaries!

I have a bowl like that, and it sounds amazing when you run the stick around the outside of the rim like A Miles said. I love that bell. If I hold it at chest level I swear I can feel it resonate with my Heart Chakra.

Why should he change? It works for him - and you too. We choose our behavior, it doesn’t just happen.

I’m happy for you that it brings you peace.
