TSR Update - September 10, 2007

Recovery Month is beginning with a bang! Melissa and went to Washington D.C. last week to attend a news conference at The National Press Club. SAMHSA (The Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) presented the results of the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the panel of experts included John Walters, Director of The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Terry Cline, The Administrator of SAMHSA, and Dr. H. Westley Clark, The Director of SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

We also celebrated the event by attending a luncheon on Capitol Hill with some pretty big names. There were several senators and congressmen, but by far, the most awaited speaker was Nikki Sixx, who is a member of the rock group Motley Crue (My 20 year old son went ballistic when Nikki graciously spoke to him on my cell phone - I am now officially the coolest mom in the universe!) He has just written a book called “The Heroin Diaries”, recounting a year in the life of an active, heroin addicted, heavy metal rock star. He is now clean and sober and is an outspoken advocate for recovery. It was so cool to see him on the dais.
